Úloha 1

1. Which sport has Joe chosen to do this school year?

A: Dad, I’d like to do a new sport this school year. What did you do when you were my age?
B: Swimming. Why don’t you try swimming too, Joe?
A: I would choose swimming if the swimming club wasn’t full already. That’s why my friends are taking up volleyball this year. Maybe I should too.
B: Volleyball’s fun, but only if you prefer team sports.
A: And I don’t. So, then there’s running or cycling. I can do those alone.
B: Exactly. Let’s see, swimming club’s full and your bike’s old. We can’t afford to buy a new one right now. So, running? You don’t need any expensive equipment for that.
A: That’s true but it’s boring, at least for me. Well, my bike’s not that old. It’s not the most beautiful one, but I can still use it. Or I can borrow one from the school club.
B: Alright, Joe. If it’s fine with you, sign in.
A: I will.

2. What was found last week in the old Spanish ship?

Last week, experts discovered an 18th century Spanish ship at the bottom of the ocean near Colombia. They used an underwater camera to explore the inside of the ship and to see what things it carried. They hoped to find jewellery or coins like British experts did in a British ship the week before. As the camera got inside the Spanish ship, the experts thought they saw something like statues. But when the camera got closer, it was clear they weren’t looking at statues but old guns. In the end, apart from the guns, nothing else was found. However, it is believed that what was found inside the ship is worth thousands of dollars and definitely has greater historical value than jewellery, which is usually found in ships together with coins.

3. What kind of weather has Jane had on her trip so far today?

A: Hi Jane! So, how’s the trip going?
B: Hi mom! We are on our way up Bird Hill now and we’ve just stopped at the Hiker’s Hut to have snacks. We have our raincoats ready just in case it starts to rain. But we haven’t needed them so far. It’s a pity we haven’t seen the sun since this morning. Because I was looking forward to the beautiful view from the top of the hill. My friends say that on the sunny day, you can see as far as 50 miles from there. But if it doesn’t start raining before we get there, I might still enjoy the view a little. Well, at least the wind’s not as strong as we expected. But it’s still unpleasant. Imagine if it started raining. The wind would blow the rain in our faces, too.

4. What is the woman going to buy as a souvenir for her sister?

A: Can I help you?
B: Yes, I’d like a souvenir with Prague Castle on it for my sister. I always buy her a mug, so something different this time. Like a t-shirt? The one over there with Prague Castle on it looks great. Do you have one in blue?
A: Sorry, only in white.
B: Oh, that’s a pity. If you had the t-shirt in blue, I’d buy it.
A: I see. So, how about a book about Prague Castle or an umbrella with a picture of Prague Castle on it?
B: My sister prefers plain umbrellas, but the book looks interesting. She’s not into reading though. But I’ll buy the book anyway, for myself.
A: And for your sister would you like one of the mugs after all? These with Prague Castle on them are popular with tourists. More than t-shirts, to be honest. And we have them in different colours.
B: Hmm, the white one doesn’t look bad. I’ll get her one of those. She doesn’t have one from Prague yet.

A: Martha, are you okay?
B: Yes, just tired. I slept badly last night.
A: I see. Aren’t you wearing the same green dress as yesterday?
B: Oh, I put on a red dress this morning, but then I spilled coffee on it. So, instead of looking for another clean dress, I just put the green one back on. But you look fresh. I bet that you slept well last night.
A: I did. I slept two hours in the afternoon yesterday, and then six more at night. It wasn’t my usual eight hours of sleep at night, but I feel great.
B: Lucky you. See, if I wanted to get eight hours of sleep on a week-day night, I would have to be asleep at 10 pm. Although I am in bed at that time, it always takes me 30 minutes to fall asleep. So, that’s why I’m often tired in the morning.
A: And do you get up right after you wake up?
B: No, after waking up I lie in bed for a while.
A: It seems to be a good idea, right? I did that too. Until I found out that it is best to get out of bed right away. Lying in bed for a while only makes people more tired.
B: I just feel that there’s no good advice for me. I just don’t sleep well. Last month, I tried sleeping with the window open. The cool air was pleasant but I could hear all the traffic below. Every loud noise woke me up so I had to decide what I liked more: cool night air or silence?
A: And you chose silence?
B: Right. What do you prefer, Charlie?
A: The same as you, actually. Well, sorry to hear you don’t sleep well. Do you have nice dreams at least?
B: Yes, surprisingly I do. And I remember most of them. They’re mostly funny.
A: I wish I didn’t keep forgetting mine all the time. So, I can’t tell you if my dreams are funny or not.
B: Hahaha, well, listen. Maybe I sleep badly because I stare at my mobile phone before bedtime.
A: Everybody does that. But you don’t put it under your pillow then, do you?
B: Is that a bad thing when I do it? For me, it’s the best place to put my mobile phone at night. I used to put it on the bed-side table but now it’s much better.
A: You are unbelievable.
B: Okay, Charlie, nobody’s perfect. You, for example, fell asleep in English class last week. I heard it from Peter. He sent me a photo of you sleeping on your desk. Look.
A: Yes, that is me. But that’s from two weeks ago. I wasn’t at school last week, remember?
B: Oh, that’s right.

Hello everyone. My name is Andrew and I’d like to welcome you on board. Our first stop today is at Bluefield Shopping Centre. Now, the shopping centre opens at half-past eight in the morning, and closes at half-past eleven in the evening every day, except for Sunday, when it closes at half-past ten. Before we get there, let me tell you something about it. The construction of the four-level shopping centre started in 1989, and in 1992 the shopping centre opened its doors to the public. Basically, everything about the shopping centre is big. So, it needs a lot of staff. Year-round, the shopping centre employs 11 000 people. But in December, it employs 12 500. The shopping centre has four levels. There is also an exhibition area on the roof where exhibitions are held during the summer. If you are interested in seeing old bicycles, they are on display on the roof at the moment. Next week, an exhibition of over 150 000 flowers is taking place there for the popular flower festival. Level one is the location of 500 fashion shops and the only book shop in the shopping centre, you must see it. It’s called Hucksy. Spelled H-U-C-K-S-Y, and it takes up 10 000 square feet. You’ll find 5 miles of bookshelves full of books there. Besides books, posters are also sold there for reasonable prices. Level two is the entertainment level with a cinema, gallery, and music hall. A violin concert is taking place there in the music hall in an hour. If you’re interested, you can get free tickets to the concert. They are available in the gallery, nowhere else. Level three has a number of restaurants, including the famous seafood restaurant where we will have lunch from 12 to 12:45. The restaurant is booked for you at this time. After lunch, at two o’clock, a boat is booked especially for you at the port. We need to be there on time…

21. What does the woman like about the magazine?

A: I see you have the new magazine. Don’t you think the name of the magazine is a bit… well, strange? I don’t think it’s a good name for the magazine.
B: I agree with you. My son bought it for me and told me there were articles really worth reading.
A: Maybe that’s why it costs so much.
B: Well, in my opinion too much. I don’t know why it is so expensive but definitely not because of the articles. They were really boring. They are all about sports, see?
A: Oh, I love sports. Tell me, are there any photographs of famous sportsmen in it?
B: Well, there are photos of the places of different sports championships, see? I’m not a great fan of sports, but I have to say I admire those photos. And they were done by professionals, worth looking at I must admit. Have a look.

Úloha 22

22. Why is Ross going to Liverpool this weekend?

A: So Ross, what are your plans for the weekend?
B: I’m going to Liverpool for the weekend again. You know my friend Alex is getting married in two weeks, so he invited his friends to come this weekend to celebrate the end of his life as a single man. Everybody is supposed to bring a costume and prepare some fun activity. I borrowed a costume and want to prepare a short performance, something silly. I did something similar once with my cousins at another party. We played a short scene from Romeo and Juliet. It was fun but I want to do something different this time. Unfortunately, both my cousins are out of town for the weekend, so I’ll have to ask some of the invited friends to perform with me. We won’t have much time to practice for the performances so I hope Alex likes it.

Úloha 23

23. What does the woman think about Lucy’s dog Ben?

When my neighbour Lucy leaves for a business trip, her dog Ben stays with me. I take him for walks but walking Ben is not easy. He’s popular in the neighbourhood and people always want to have fun with him or at least touch him. And he never tries to avoid that. I’m sure Lucy wishes Ben was shy with people, he trusts them too much. At home, Ben demands that I throw toys to him and he’s never tired of running for them. Or he bites my hand just for fun. But I have to be careful, as he thinks it’s still fun when I shout at him to stop. I love him but I can’t trust him or rely on him. He prefers to do what he wants and I’m too lazy to teach Ben to do what I want.

Úloha 24

24. Which ski boots will Doreen take on the school ski trip?

A: Doreen, have you tried uncle Brian’s ski boots yet?
B: Yes, but they are too big. I also phoned the ski rental service but they don’t have any ski boots for rent in the middle of winter.
A: Well, then why didn’t you go to the city sports shop to buy them?
B: Well, I wanted to save money. So, I checked one online shop and it’s got the exact boots I need. And they’re quite cheap. But their delivery time is at least three days., and I’m leaving for the school trip in two days.
A: Don’t panic, I know you, so I stopped in the city sports shop on my way home and got you the boots for the ski trip. Go into the living room and try them.
B: Wow, they’re exactly the ones I wanted to order online. Let’s see. They fit perfectly! Now I have everything for the ski trip. I’ll call uncle Brian right away and tell him I won’t need his boots.
