Úloha 1
1. What did the woman lose yesterday?
A: My husband Jerry got angry with me yesterday because I’d lost something. Again. See, when I got home yesterday I wanted to read the newspaper, but I couldn’t find my reading glasses. God knows where I left them. After an hour I gave up searching for them and I decided to read the news on my phone in big letters. Luckily I didn’t lose my phone like last week. That was the third time I lost my phone this year. Anyway, while I was reading, Jerry asked me where the car key was. For once it wasn’t me who couldn’t find the car key. In the end we found it hanging under my umbrella in the hall. And my reading glasses? Before I buy a new pair, I’ll borrow a pair from my colleague. Anyway, I hope it doesn’t rain today as I left my umbrella at home. I didn’t want to lose time by returning for my umbrella.

2. What does Ashley want to be in the future?
A: Hi, Ashley! I haven’t seen you for ages! How are you? And how is your sister?
B: Hi, Tom. I’m fine and so is she. At present she’s studying to become a teacher. I graduated from the same university department a year ago.
A: Oh, so you’re a teacher?
B: Well, yes, I teach maths but along with my work I attend a course for photographers. As soon as I finish it I’ll start a career as a photographer and give up teaching.
A: Really? I’m sure you’ll become the best one ever. And what about your father? Isn’t he sad you didn’t become a vet like him?
B: He is and I love animals but I can’t really imagine myself being a vet.
A: I see. What about your childhood dream of becoming a police woman? Wasn’t that your dream job when you were a kid?
B: Yes, but with all the crime nowadays I’ve changed my mind. And what do you do, Tom?

3. Which jewellery box did Ron buy?
A: Ron, what a lovely jewellery box!
B: Thanks, mum. Shopping for it wasn’t easy, but the shop assistant was helpful. She told me round jewellery boxes were popular and showed me some black ones. I thought of buying one of them, but when I saw their square shaped ones, I changed my mind. They were more elegant. So I went for a black square shaped jewellery box and I went to the cash desk to pay for it. When the cashier saw it, she told me about their special service – writing names on jewellery boxes. She showed me an example of a white name on a round black jewellery box. I got excited about the service and decided to use it. However, I didn’t want to switch to a round jewellery box and you know what? In the end I decided to change the colour of the box because in my opinion, Emily’s name in white on black wouldn’t look good. I made a good decision don’t you think? It’s much better than just a box without Emily’s name on it, hmm?

4. What is Oliver not going to do today?
A: Oliver, don’t you have to finish your school project today?
B: I do. I’m just waiting for some ideas. I’m going to finish it in the evening.
A: The ideas would come quicker if you started doing something. Make lunch, for example?
B: I guess you’re right. Some activity would help. I’m going to take the dog for a walk.
A: Now? It’s almost lunch time.
B: Yes, now. I’ll buy something and eat it on my way to David’s place after that. We’re going to the swimming pool in the afternoon. I haven’t done any sports for three weeks because of that school project, so I can’t wait to go.

A: Hi, Robert. Did you enjoy Christmas this year?
B: Hi, Lucy. Actually, I’m glad it’s over. You know, my parents simply don’t understand I’m not a kid anymore, and that I don’t have to spend Christmas Day with them every year.
I think my parents will never forgive me and my girlfriend for being together this year instead of spending Christmas Day with them.
A: Really? Well, I spent Christmas Day with my boyfriend and his family at their house. However, I hope we will be at my parents’ house next year. You know, the roasted turkey my mom prepares is great, as well as all the other things like singing Christmas carols. My boyfriend hates it, but I think it really creates a nice atmosphere. Anyway, did you get anything special this Christmas?
B: Well, I got many useful things. My girlfriend knew that I needed a case for the laptop that I bought last year, so she gave me one as a gift. What did you get?
A: Just a few things. So, although I really like to give presents, I prefer not getting any. I never know how to behave when I get a present. I always feel, well, embarrassed.
B: The same with me, but Christmas shopping is becoming more expensive every year. This year, I set a limit of $300 to spend on Christmas presents, and I managed not to go over it. But I’m afraid next year it’s going to cost much more than $300.
A: Wow, I don’t spend that much money on presents. What I hate about Christmas shopping is crowded shops. That’s why I usually start buying presents in October. But this year, I bought my first gifts a month earlier, so by October, I already had all of them.
B: Cool, I’ll do that next year too. This year, I started searching for gifts in December. I was so busy that I hardly found time to visit the Christmas market. In the end, I didn’t miss it, but I didn’t buy anything there. I wish I had gone to a Christmas party instead.
A: Oh, I love Christmas parties. Unfortunately, my company’s director refused to have
any Christmas events this year, saying that our company couldn’t afford it. But I just couldn’t imagine the end of the year without a Christmas party. So, although I’m not very good at organizing anything, I booked a restaurant and invited many people for my work to have one. It was great.
B: Well, speaking about restaurants, how about going to one for lunch right now?
A: Sure, let’s go.

Our guest today is Josh Gordon. Josh is a regular participant in the Ironman Triathlon which consists of swimming, cycling and running. So Josh, tell us about your Ironman experience. Well, where to begin? I took part in my first Ironman Triathlon in 2014 in Wales.
My goal was to finish the race in the time limit, which was 17 hours. But it took me 18 and some athletes even needed 19 hours to finish the race. I was disappointed that it took me so long. Before my first Ironman Triathlon, I thought that the most difficult part for me would be cycling. But it was during swimming that I felt the most exhausted. Surprisingly, the least difficult part was running the 42.2 kilometres. After my first Ironman Triathlon, I realised I needed to train more to compete again. For example, last year during training, I rode 9168 kilometres. Can you imagine? I also decided to change my eating habits. I eat less meat now and I stopped eating pasta altogether. And the change in my diet helped. Thanks to my good results, I got a chance to take part in the Ironman World Championship last year. It was held in Hawaii in October. But I left for Hawaii in September to have at least one month to prepare for the race. However, the race in the Ironman World Championship is an expensive thing. Luckily, my brother lent me some money so I didn’t have to borrow money from my father or even a bank. The Ironman World Championship was the most difficult race of my life. The moment I finished it, all I wanted to do was to sleep. And I did just that right away. I was completely exhausted. After the race, my wife joined me in Hawaii and we hired a local guide with whom we explored the island. His surname is Hayes. Spelled H A Y E S. If you ever find yourself in Hawaii and want to explore it with a guide, ask for him.

21. What does Tim do to improve his Spanish?
A: Hi, Tim. Are you still taking that Spanish course?
B: Hi, Emily. Well, the course is over. I’ve been learning Spanish on my own for the past two months, but obviously attending a course was much better.
A: Definitely. I try to improve my Spanish by reading Spanish books, but it doesn’t help much.
B: Well, I think it works in my case. I need to use a dictionary while reading, but I don’t mind. I also tried to watch Spanish movies, however, I hardly understood what they were saying, so I let it go. But I might try again later when I am better at Spanish.
A: I think the best way to get better at Spanish, besides attending a course, is to communicate with a native speaker.
B: You are right. You know what? There are some students from Spain at my university, so how about contacting some of them and asking them for help? I’m sure speaking with native speakers will improve our Spanish.
A: Great!

22. Why does the man not eat in restaurants?
I don’t even remember the last time I ate in a restaurant. I bring my lunch in a lunchbox to my office, and in the evening I have dinner with my girlfriend at home. Well, although cooking at home usually costs less money than eating out, that’s not really our case because we use lots of expensive ingredients. See, I’m allergic to fish and tomatoes, so we need to choose what we cook carefully. From this point of view, eating in restaurants would definitely save us lots of time and money, but why should I eat out? My girlfriend enjoys cooking, and I admire her for being able to prepare much tastier meals than in any restaurant I’ve been to, so actually I have no reason to go to any. However, if I had to cook just for myself, I would probably end up eating out anyway, to be honest. It takes me ages to cook something, so I try to avoid cooking if I can.

23. What does the woman say about her office?
I work in a marketing company and I share an office with other women. People wouldn’t expect a women’s office to be messy. However, my colleagues and I are different. There are always things everywhere. Nothing seems to have its own place. But we don’t mind. Not every women’s office has to be tidy. What bothers us though is that we need to wear something warm, even on sunny days, because the windows in the office face north so we never get any direct sunshine. When we want to get warm, we go to the tiny kitchen. It’s a bright and cozy room. While making hot tea there, we chat. In fact, it’s the only place we talk to each other. And when we chat, the room gets really noisy. Then we go back to our office and continue working in silence.

24. Where did the couple decide to spend their holiday this year?
A: So do you really want to go to Greece this year again? I would much rather stay here in the UK. Although we live here, we haven’t been to many parts of it yet. Besides, it’s always too hot in Greece in summer.
B: Well, we could go somewhere else. My colleague, for example, often goes hiking in Austria.
A: Well, I’d rather go to Austria than Greece, but hiking isn’t the right thing for my injured knee right now. How about France? We could drive there and take our bikes with us.
B: Well, going by car to France would be too tiring, but I like the idea of riding bikes on holiday. You know what? You’re right. There’s actually no need to go abroad this year.
A: Great! It’ll be the best holiday ever!
